Economic Impact of the Horse Racing Industry

These horse industry statistics are supplied by the American Horse Council, Washington D.C.

  • The horse industry provides 1.4 million full time jobs.
  • The horse industry pays $1.9 billion in taxes.
  • 1.9 million people own horses
  • The median income for horse owning households is $60,000
  • 14% of horse-owning households have income under $25,000
  • 38% of horse-owning households have incomes under $50,000
  • 725,000 of those horses are involved in racing and race horse breeding.

Survey Highlights have been compiled by Kansas Agricultural Statistics, Topeka Kansas September 1996.

  • Survey results indicated a total of 103,000 equine in Kasas as of January 1, 1996.
  • Race horse breeds total 6,400 head.
  • The value of race breed horses totaled $13.9 million.
  • Equine related assets totaled over $1.03 billion.
  • 15,200 horse trailers and/or horse vans are owned by Kansas equine operators.
  • Total expenditures of $142.8 million during 1995.
  • Feed expenses accounted for $35.3 million.
  • Boarding and training fees totaled $8.4 million.  (Trainer expenses per day for TB at the track averages $20 to $30 per day in state and $30 to $55 or greater out of state.)
  • $7.9 million paid for health.
  • $5.9 million for farrier services.
  • $4.8 million spent for shipping and travel.
  • $3.9 million for fees and payments.
  • $3.6 million for taxes.
  • Labor expenses totaled over $14 million.
