Kansas Greyhounds win with
the Expanded Gaming Opportunity Act

Kansas is the leader in breeding and training racing greyhounds.  Abilene is the home of the National Greyhound Association.  And Kansas Greyhound operators are experts who compete in 18 states and bring home to Kansas more than 30 million dollars in purses and prizes.

Kansas Greyhound operators are spread all across Kansas. A recent economic impact study found that the Industry adds more than 150 million dollars to the rural Kansas economy through the agricultural portions of this industry.

  • There are almost 24-thousand Greyhounds in Kansas.
  • Kansas Greyhound owners and operators earn nearly 35 million dollars in purses and prizes.  Of which more than 30 million dollars come from other states, where gaming revenues are used to enhance prizes.
  • Only 40% of Kansas racing greyhounds actually race in Kansas today.

Kansas based greyhound operators are facing tough choices. Going where the purses and opportunities are better, means Kansas loses income and opportunity.  Investment occurs in other states.

The expanded gaming opportunity act allows the Kansas lottery to install Video lottery terminal at pari-mutuel racetracks in our state. A portion of the revenue from these games will be used to increase purses at the tracks and provide payments, which increase the value of Kansas Whelped Greyhounds. These breed incentives will bring new investment and new opportunity to the agricultural portion of the live racing industry.

The Kansas Greyhound Association believes rural Kansas will see an additional $100 million dollars of economic impact.  Those dollars mean jobs and opportunity all across Kansas from the greyhound industry alone.

Kansas already has gaming.  Unfortunately the benefit of that gaming activity goes to Indian casinos and Missouri riverboats, and hurts the greyhound industry.  SB 587 allows the industry and the state to benefit from gaming already in Kansas.
