Economic Development

There are a variety of ways expanded gaming will provide economic development for the state of Kansas, including construction jobs, permanent jobs, stimulate segments of agriculture, benefits to cities and counties, and last but not least additional revenue for the state of Kansas.

CONSTRUCTION JOBS

The construction industry estimates the development of just one destination resort casino will add approximately 1,500 new construction jobs.  Renovation and new construction at Pari-mutuel racetracks to facilitate gaming, can add as many as 5,000 construction jobs statewide.

PERMANENT JOBS

Each new destination resort casino will add approximately 2,000 permanent jobs.  Expanded gaming can add more than 10,000 permanent jobs statewide.

AGRICULTURE

The gaming support for the horse and dog industry in Kansas will not only insure that these industries stay in Kansas, but they will also grow.  The economic impact of these industries currently is more than $250 million a year. (More information is available on the Agriculture Page.)

CITY AND COUNTY BENEFITS

The proposed gaming legislation allocates 3 percent of gaming revenues to these local jurisdictions. This could total as much as $8 million dollars a year for each destination resort casino. Statewide, local governments could realize more than $30 million annually. This money can allow the local governments to reduce property taxes, develop needed infrastructure or provide needed social services.

STATE OF KANSAS BENEFITS

The addition of $150 million to $200 million annually to the state's general fund can add dollars to education, reduce the budget deficit pressure and reduce the possibility of increased taxes.
